Artist’s Statement
I primarily work with painting, photography, print, assemblage, film and video collage that inspire a phenomenological questioning of how as women we see each other and ourselves. How does one see oneself? How does one feel seeing one self? My work engages with body awareness as coined by the Austrian artist Maria Lassnig in a concentrated way in my work. Being a female body predominantly in a domestic space this past year has enabled me to consider the feelings this can conjure up. I question how this translates into a visceral understanding of the human body, the female psyche and interiority. I make as a way of figuring the figure out letting wants inside out and back in again. Everything I touch in the domestic space is charged with use. I build my assemblages with household objects, I pour paint or plaster over them, wrap them in fabric, stand them on or against cement walls, metal stands, tripod structures. They are used as props in my self-portrait photographs and paintings where I am the subject matter, the model so to speak using my own image and objects that block out the face. I collect, draw, paint female portraits I collect images from the media to create intimate etchings and a painted wall that represents a female collective psyche of sorts. Currently, I am working on a new body of work, The Woman in the Window Project to engage with interiority as a concept to reflect on and to explore female identity within the history of feminist experimental methods in revisioning historical narratives. I am interested in developing a visual representation of women in their domestic space to reflect on female identity and the interior struggle a sentient body in the domestic space has on a physical, conscious and subconscious level.
